Sept 4, 07: Hurricanes season

Last week I was privileged to present a local screening of the PBS Documentary, "Washing Away: Losing Louisiana." This film was first aired in September, 2006, and featured a number of Gulf Coast families who have sustained losses from Katrina and Rita. Attendance at the screening was good, and I found joy in being able to give some sort of useful expression for my passion for the Gulf and its people.

This local event was part of a nationwide campaign by Gulf Restoration Network, an environmental advocacy organization, to inform the public and recruit participation for its important work. Legislation crucial to saving the Coast is currently before congress -- the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA bill). I encourage you to check with GRN -- google for their website -- to subscribe to their e-newsletter and to add your name to a petition to appropriate government people -- to pass and enact the WRDA bill. Saving the coast is essential to not only New Orleans but to all the coastal communities and the Cajun way of life. You can, indeed, help.

Even as I write, Mexican and Central American communities are being battered by another Force 5 hurricane. These vulnerable people are as precious to God as anyone in the United States. Pray for them and their fragile communities.

Peace, Warren
