Undocumented immigrants

I'm doing my best to abstain from politics; all it does is give me digestive and emotional distress. But the subject of illegal immigration just won't leave me alone. I cannot dismiss the knowledge that Joseph, Mary and their little boy Jesus were, themselves, undocumented aliens, unwanted and in a strange land. I cannot dismiss the line from our Lord's Prayer: Forgive us our trespasses, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. That seems clear enough: we don't forgive -- we don't get forgiven. Trespassers, even. Jesus says WE ARE TRESPASSERS. And I cannot dismiss the sure knowledge that I've been welcomed by Jesus to a banquet table at which I do not deserve to dine, and into a land in which I do not deserve to dwell.
Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. Enough.
